Skomer Island

Located just off the coast of Pembrokeshire in Wales and home to the Atlantic Puffin. This could be the most magical place for Wildlife I have visited so far, with over 50,000 active breeding pairs of Puffins, it’s non-stop action from before you even get off the boat! Here you can experience the incredible images I captured and even learn a bit about the Puffins, how I capture certain shots and some of other wildlife that can also be found on the Island.

Atlantic Puffin

The Atlantic Puffin, one of our most recognisable seabirds with their colourful beaks and comical appearance. They are actually quite a small bird, measuring only around 26-29cm tall when fully grown. Although Puffins spend most of their lives out at sea and are fantastic swimmers, diving under water to depths of 60 meters in search of their favourite foods such as sand eels, herring and sprats. They are also surprisingly speedy in the air too, and can fly around 50-55mph. When the spring arrives they return to their breeding colonies on rocky islands and coastal cliffs, where they often reunite with the same partner each year. Making their nests in underground burrows, where they lay only one egg per pair.

Silhouettes

If you’ve ever been out in near perfect conditions during sunset, then I’d definitely recommend giving silhouette images like these a go. I captured both of these images within about an hour of each other and both have a completely different feel to them. I was rather lucky with these shots as the Puffin barely moved while chilling on this rock for ages, looking out to sea. From seeing the sunset directly behind the puffin which creates this magical golden looking glow, to after the sun had completely set, having the Puffin only being lit by the night sky, giving this beautiful cool blue appearance the image.

Although there are no, ground predators such as Rats or Foxes found on Skomer Island. One thing is for sure… and that’s there’s plenty of Rabbits. It was great fun watching these hopping around the bracken and ferns which gave plenty of opportunities during the sunrise to get some incredible shots like these in the early morning light.
